(2021) OranjeBuiten has a new resident: ‘the OrangeParrot’. This ‘OrangeParrot’ is old and wise and knows absolutely everything about nature. He also sees that things are heading in the wrong direction. That’s why I made him the narrator of a nature documentary. Through a series of episodes, this documentary will gradually unfold.
In February 2021, I was approached by Arnoud Ruiter, the owner of beach pavilion OranjeBuiten. He was looking for someone to add a playful, creative experience to his beach venue and asked me to take it on. That’s where the idea was born to create a David Attenborough-style nature documentary.
Visitors to OranjeBuiten can now chill out while discovering all kinds of fun facts about nature. And that matters, because unfamiliarity breeds indifference and with indifference we are not going to save the planet.. Hopefully, visitors will leave caring just a little more about the natural world. The episodes are cheerful and colourful, and they spark interesting conversations. In addition to painting the episodes and writing the nature facts on site, I also help develop the graphic design for OranjeBuiten. The ‘OrangeParrot’ needs to fly through into things like the menu and other printed materials. I created these together with my talented colleague Joris Mooijman.
