(2025) During my artist residency in Polopos earlier this year, the idea came up to gift the village a present in the form of a beautiful mural. In those first few weeks in Spain, I found myself unexpectedly drawn to the Bible, even though I wasn’t raised Catholic at all. In the studio, I painted a few biblical scenes on canvas, including the two doves of peace. I could clearly picture them on a wall somewhere in the village. Of course, the dream was to paint them on the church itself. So I decided to give it a try. I asked for permission during mass, both from the priest and the church council. To my surprise, they were all in favour. That went surprisingly smoothly. The next step was to speak to the neighbours. That was a bit more complicated. Maybe it’s only natural that things need to stir a little before peace can settle in. Eventually, everyone came on board and I was finally able to start painting the mural. And if I may say so myself, it turned out beautifully. Now I definitely feel like painting another one. So if you know a good wall somewhere, please send me a message.
(At the bottom of this page, you’ll find a video of me painting “The Two Doves” on the wall)
